Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz

Who is this novel for?

Choose this English paperback for readers ages 12 to 16 who want history-centered fiction without dense prose. Customers repeatedly say the storytelling is straightforward and easy to follow, and several mention that middle school readers, teenagers, and even reluctant readers stayed engaged with the plot. Adult readers in reviews also note that the novel reads smoothly beyond the school audience.

When would you read it?

Pick this 272-page novel for school reading, travel, or a short reading break when you want a book that moves quickly. Reviewers say the pacing is absorbing enough to finish in one sitting or over five to six hours, and one reader specifically bought the book for a class report. The paperback format also makes the novel easy to carry.

What makes the storytelling different?

Expect detailed writing that does not soften the Holocaust setting. Buyers say the author includes meaningful historical detail while keeping the narrative clear, so the story stays informative without becoming hard to follow. That balance is a major reason readers describe the novel as gripping and well suited to middle school and teen readers.

What do buyers say most often?

Prepare for an emotional read rather than a distant history summary. Customer feedback repeatedly calls the novel sad, moving, and memorable, with some readers mentioning tears and others pointing to Yanek and the direct treatment of suffering as reasons the story stayed with them. The strongest pattern across reviews is readability, emotional force, and strong writing quality.

What should families and teachers know?

Know that the subject matter can feel intense for sensitive or younger children. The paperback is broadly praised as age-appropriate for teenagers and young adults, but reviews also mention disturbing scenes, especially for readers under 14. For classroom or shared reading, the novel fits best when readers are ready for serious historical themes.
