Highly Informative
This is my first read of Manu S Pillai. I must admit, he has a nuance style with the flavor of Dalrymple. Considering his age, we have loads to come in the future. Rebel Sultans is a comprehensive detailed account on the Deccan history from the early 1200 to late 1600.I loved the book, please have a read.

Very good book on Deccan history .. discusses in detail little known (mostly unknown) facets of the Great rulers of South India.

Not for beginners....
After reading the book a learner will definately wish to go for other books as the book fails to mention properly which foreign traveller came during whose reign... Although the relations between the dynasties has been dealt with but could have been done in a better way... Its a book whose pages are flippable for an already learned man... But for beginners of the subject.. This can be a difficult read.

Amazing writing style - Makes History so easy
Manu S Pallai has a unique writing style. Making a subject like history interesting is what the writer is an expert at. He correlates the incidents and Kings with such interesting happenings that you willfind the subject easy to understand and connect with.Need such books in School to create a lasting impression of history on the students mind.Strongly recommend reading this .

Pop History of a much ignored age
There are many fine reviews of this book which I have now read, so at the cost of this appearing a cop-out, just jotting down the highlights:- Yes, this is indeed "pop history" as someone on GR put, simplified for an audience without the patience to dig through academic tomes but yet backed up with an impressive set of references for those who do dare look things up and give us a certain amount of confidence. 99% of us won't though...- Most of us have heard of all of these characters in the history we learnt in school. Most of us also wouldn't be able to draw a dynasty other than the Mughal's straight with it all being a jumbled mess. What this book does is to at least create that high level structure in your mind and set the 'context' - you do now know who is in who's team, or which are the teams even...- It is however easy (and tempting) to get lost in the details beyond a point. I almost wanted those summary boxes ("Key Points") we had in our school textbooks somewhere in the narrative.- Yes, the fact that kings did not divide on religious lines in that era is a very relevant point to emphasize and take away. Also yes, this was repeated a few times too many perhaps.- Maps. The book needed more maps. Lots of them. To be able to connect history to the geography of today is one of the best ways to make it come alive no?- The dry humour and irreverence in general is a most excellent way of writing history. Yeh dil maange more.- To have 2 full books out before you're 28 just makes the rest of us feel bad about our lives... :-)
