Grenade by Alan Gratz (Paperback)

Who it's for

Choose this novel for teenagers and young readers who can handle serious historical fiction. Reviewers repeatedly recommend the book for middle-school and teen readers, and parents mention children around ages 12 and 13 staying absorbed and finishing the story quickly.

What makes it different

Expect history to come through a child’s perspective rather than a distant summary of war. Buyers say the story helps young readers understand the Battle of Okinawa by following a Japanese boy, which gives the conflict a more personal and memorable point of view.

When you'd use it

Pick up the paperback when the goal is an engaging school-year read that still feels approachable. Reviews mention teacher recommendations, tutor discussions, and independent reading, while the 288-page length keeps the commitment manageable for readers who want a full novel without a huge volume.

What buyers say

Read this book for pace as much as subject matter. Shoppers call the novel compelling, gripping, and easy to move through, and several say the plot keeps readers on edge while also pushing them to reflect on war and how differently other people live.

Good to know

Know that the reading experience is intense rather than light. Review snippets describe the story as moving, thrilling, and at times graphic, so the book fits readers ready for wartime stakes more than readers looking for a gentle adventure.
