Excellent book... Inspiring
It’s nice to read
Today, the word TATA is synonymous with TRUST. It is this solid glue that binds all stakeholders with TATAs, which is now India’s most admired, respected and loved corporate house. This unputdownable book traces the origin of this inseparable bond to Jamsetji Tata, who founded the group in 1868.Not many companies or business groups of this size continue in business for over 50 years, thanks to Joseph Schumpeter’s forces of ‘creative destruction’. The TATA group has succeeded and thrived (Built to Last) with an impeccable track record of stellar corporate governance, visionary nation building and responsible corporate citizenry, where profits are a byproduct of a higher purpose. The community for TATA is not just a minor stakeholder, but the very purpose of its existence. The word ‘enlightened capitalism’ might sound as an oxymoron, but for Jamsetji, it was the soul of his business. The book is a fascinating, well researched, eloquent articulation of Jamsetji’s core business philosophy that has been retained, renewed and reinvigorated for over a century and a half amongst generation of TATA leaders. It is derived from the Zoroastrian precept ‘Humata-Hukata-Hvarshta’: Good thoughts, good words and good deeds. This book is not a biography of Jamsetji and the TATA group, since there are many other books that have delved into this rich and vast topic. The approach of the book is to understand the business philosophy of Jamsetji and how it is institutionalised over several generations, across diverse businesses, overcoming insurmountable challenges, starting from a colonial era to that of a modern digital age. Surviving and thriving with a soul that is eternal and that which is pure and sublime, is to take a cue from Vedanta philosophy often cited in this book. In other words, it is Jamsetji’s ‘secret sauce for creating a Sustainable, Honest and Enlightened (SHE) enterprise’.The framework of this book is highly commendable. On one hand it takes a four-step approach or ‘mental model’ describing the Philosophy, Icons (Gifted Men of ability and tall leaders of the group), Narratives (rich and elegant narratives) and Rituals (events and rites of passage for employees). With this central theme, chapters of the book are divided across 10 Ps like Philosophy, Purpose, Progress….and a Postscript. The chapter ‘Pioneering’ lists Jamsetji’s ability to see and shape the future of India’s economy. He has many firsts to his credit, and by any yardstick, the ability to conceptualise and execute high risk cutting edge technological projects that laid the foundation for a modern nation. In earlier times he had none of policy support, capital, skilled manpower or foreign exchange that we take for granted today. Yet the TATA group has many firsts to its credit, starting from India’s most modern textile mill, the first steel plant, the first hydro-electric plant, the first airline, first Indian owned five-star hotel (TAJ), India’s largest IT Services company, and finest institutions like the Indian Institute of Science and the Tata Memorial cancer hospital.Employee welfare was always at the core of these ventures. The Tatas were the first to introduce concepts of workspace comfort and safety, Provident Fund, Accident compensation, Pension, schools and hospitals for employees and children, much before anyone could even think of such measures, and when labour laws were non-existent. Thus, ‘wealth is held in trust for people and used exclusively for their benefit’ as aptly quoted from J.R.D. Tata’s book on Jamsetji. It is mentioned that JRD once said that he is a ‘Socialistic Capitalist’. The business acumen of a Capitalist blended with a heart of a Socialist is an alchemy for prosperity with happiness. The story of TATA coffee, where a dedicated team of over 170 naturalists were deployed to avoid human-animal conflict and protect the wild elephants, deeply touched me. My sip of Tata Coffee every morning will now be a prayer to God to bless the TATA group for the compassion that transcends the narrow pursuit of corporate profits, and spread happiness on this planet to all stakeholders, including our flora and fauna. Jamsetji will be glad that his successors have not let him down and the happy elephants will gracefully nod in agreement.TATA stands not only for TRUST, but also LOVE and CARE, that is deeply etched in our hearts.Outstanding work by Gopal and Harish. Jamsetji will bless you abundantly as much as we thank you wholeheartedly for these incisive, insightful and inspiring perspectives.Highly recommended, a required reading at top business schools like IIM-Ahmedabad (my Alma-mater too), that shapes brilliant young minds, to realise our dream of Viksit Bharat.
Most reviewers find the writing engaging and easy to follow, with many calling the book fascinating and hard to put down. Readers generally say the material feels accessible rather than dense.
Readers mainly point to clear lessons on leadership, vision, and values. Customer feedback says the authors turn Jamsetji Tata’s complex business thinking into ideas that feel practical and actionable.
Yes, buyers say the book goes beyond surface-level praise and gets into business strategy. Reviews mention in-depth analysis along with useful historical detail about the Tata group.
Expect a blend of both. Top reviews describe a narrative rooted in Jamsetji Tata’s life and legacy, while keeping a steady focus on corporate principles, trust, and ethical leadership.
Beginners should be comfortable with it. One customer specifically calls it great knowledge for readers starting in entrepreneurship, and the strong readability feedback supports that view.
The hardcover runs 256 pages. That length suits readers who want a substantial business read without taking on a very long leadership biography.
