Projekt 1065: A Novel of World War II by Alan Gratz

Who it's for

Choose this World War II historical novel for readers ages 12 to 16 who want a story-led introduction to the period. Reviewers repeatedly mention sixth and seventh graders, middle school students, and young history buffs, and several say the English prose feels readable rather than dense.

Readers who like moral choices, friendship, and family tension alongside historical events are likely to connect with the book. More than one review also notes that the younger target age does not stop older readers from enjoying the story.

When you'd use it

Pick up this paperback for independent reading, classroom reading, or a first step into historical fiction. One review calls it a great book for class, while another says it sparked a first real interest in the genre.

A 320-page length makes the novel substantial enough for discussion or assignments without feeling drawn out. Several readers say the pacing is strong enough that they moved through it very quickly once the plot took hold.

What buyers say

Expect suspense first, with history carried through the plot. Customers describe the story as full of intrigue, plot twists, and constant momentum, and more than one reader says they kept turning pages because they never knew what would happen next.

The strongest praise centers on how the book makes difficult World War II subject matter feel vivid and accessible. Buyers also say the historical angle adds real learning value instead of sitting in the background.

Good to know

Look here if writing style matters as much as subject matter. Buyers consistently praise Alan Gratz for clear storytelling and say the novel teaches historical perspective without reading like a textbook.

Shoppers also mention that the narrative stays engaging from start to finish, with some saying they finished it in a day. For readers who want educational fiction that still reads like a page-turner, that balance comes up again and again.
